Cello Health Communications has a scientific team consisting of scientific directors, writers, researchers and editors based in the UK and US, with a wide range of experience and expertise. We’re looking for a brilliant individual who demonstrates an excellent scientific understanding and can translate that understanding into medical strategy and compelling scientific stories that resonate with target audiences. This individual must also be able to pair their scientific acumen and eye for innovation with a commercial understanding that will ensure they lead a team to develop high-quality deliverables and to actively generate wealth for the business.

 

The role

The Cello Health Communications Scientific Director is a key leadership role within the agency, accountable to the Head of Scientific Services for editorial and content quality they work with clients to challenge, develop and shape pharmaceutical scientific strategies of the future. They are recognised internally and externally as experts in the development and implementation of strategic communication plans, often in one or several therapy areas/specialisms.

Scientific Directors are expected to lead teams by example, having responsibility and accountability for delivery of consistently high‐quality work, whether that be through facilitation of advisory boards and scientific meetings, through partnering with clients to develop future scientific strategy or through development of medical strategy for business development. They are expected to own client relationships at a senior level, and as part of a team manage the scientific aspects of projects and programmes of work.

Scientific Directors assume responsibility for delivering wealth to the organisation, through innovation, personally selling and supporting delivery (mainly through delegation) of work across a broad number of offerings. Driving both organic and new business development, they are responsible for actively generating business that can be delivered by their team, being central to identifying new business opportunities and driving scientific strategy for proposals and pitches.

Scientific Directors are responsible for reviewing the work of others, whether in a coaching capacity or through formal line management whist maintaining an established balance between business development, delivery of billed work and team management and support. Playing a key role in giving the teams an identity and supporting them to live Cello Health Communications values and culture, they encourage collaboration across Cello Health, whilst driving the delivery to strategic goals with a specific focus on their own personal and their team’s development plans to achieve individual, team and overall business objectives.

The role requires a balanced ability to

  • Provide strategic‐level input and expertise on client accounts to drive growth in existing accounts and for new business
  • Partake in the generation of new and innovative ideas based on scientific content and delivery, to broaden the offerings of Cello Health and ensure we keep pace with the changing environment
  • Build team culture and capability through role‐model leadership, delegation and solid guidance on project delivery, using scientific leadership to drive exceptional standards and team excellence
  • Manage scientific teams and delivers to innovative programmes with integrity, and lead scientific excellence and quality, through direction, guidance and training

Requirements

  • Life science degree or higher, PhD in a relevant subject preferred
  • A willingness to uphold the company values and to lead the teams by example
  • Extensive healthcare agency experience in a scientific and strategic capacity, preferably at Scientific Director level
  • Experience of developing medical strategy in a business development capacity
  • Previous experience as a medical writer in an agency or pharmaceutical environment
  • Strong analytical skills, a problem-solving mind-set and the ability to think critically and creatively
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), with a high aptitude for scientific story telling
  • Excellent organisational skills and an ability to juggle several responsibilities, accounts and projects, manage incoming workload effectively and maintain standards of excellence
