The Senior Leadership Team in a specialist international healthcare company seeking to evaluate potential future business opportunities within the field of Microbiome.

THE BUSINESS CHALLENGE

The landscape of the Human Microbiome is highly complex and uncertain, with much associated hype and many factors influencing market development. Our client required a rigorous evaluation of the future landscape and creation of detailed future scenarios to enable them to make strategic business decisions

OUR APPROACH

We used a series of proprietary methodologies including our Scenario Planning methodology to support this project. We reviewed and evaluated existing information sources and identified the important gaps in knowledge against our critical thinking framework. The priority gaps were filled using additional desk and primary research. We then designed a series of workshops and creative sessions to engage the cross-functional senior leadership team in considering key trends and their implications. We then developed a range of scenarios, with multiple variables, depicting plausible future worlds. These scenarios allowed us to support our client in the evaluation and selection of strategic options against a range of future landscapes.


THE RESULTS

As the project progressed, we created an interactive and highly visual PDF outlining the evolution of the microbiome landscape and the different scenarios. This allowed the work to live within the organisation and also provide an ongoing test bed for future strategic thinking and decision making. The senior team were fully engaged in the process endorsing the scenarios and owning the strategy. Gaps in market knowledge and capabilities were identified and plans to fill them initiated. Ultimately, the process allowed our client to grasp a complex evolving landscape and make otherwise difficult strategic decisions with confidence.
