SUCCESSFUL LAUNCH PLANNING

THE CLIENT

The C-suite of an established European, primary care healthcare company who were looking to transform themselves into a company specialising in biologics

THE BUSINESS CHALLENGE

Launching specialised biologic medicines requires a very different set of organisational skills, capabilities, processes and ways of working. Our client was successful with their core small molecule business but inexperienced in the biologic arena, and wanted to define what it would take to ensure the success of their first asset and a pipeline of biologic compounds across multiple therapy areas

OUR APPROACH

We established a senior project team with particular expertise in launching biologics; importantly the team also had considerable experience of running Pharma businesses at a country, regional and global level. This was crucial to the success of the project, given the level of organisational change required to implement the recommendations
We undertook an extensive evaluation of a range of companies within the biologic space, analysing organisational factors contributing to performance such as structure, culture, governance, systems and planning. Having identified the key determinants of success, we audited our client against them using a combination of interviews and desk research. We then combined these findings with our own knowledge and experience to make a series of sometimes bold recommendations on how to establish the optimal process and launch organisation for a new biologic asset

THE RESULTS

The recommendations included a new infrastructure, which was a significant departure from the core small molecule business. We supported the roll out of a new unit which required significant organisational and cultural change, but enabled global consistency, shorter lines of communication and faster decision making. We then worked with the client to develop integrated launch plans, bringing together workstreams and cross-functional teams, as well as supporting the development of the strategy for the first launch asset
